Open: 9.30-12.30 and 14.30-17.30 Description: Dante's "mio bel San Giovanni" is a Romanesque octagonal building from the XI-XII centuries, the foundations are probably older. The three doors, one by A. Pisano and two by L. Ghiberti (the magnificent early Renaissance East Door, which Michelangelo declared worthy to be the Gate of Paradise, recalls the old Testament). The interior of the dome is covered with Byzantine mosaics of the 13C, the work of Venetian and Florentine artists, including Cimabue. There are mosaics by Mastro Jacopo (1225) in the apse. The tomb of the Antipope John XXIII was executed by Donatello and Michelozzo. |
