Description: It was started in 1294 to the plans of Arnolfo di Cambio, it is one of
the finest Franciscan churches in Italy, with masterpieces of Gothic art, pantheons by
illustrious Italians. The bright interior, with nave and two aisles, houses valuable
works of art by: Benedetto da Maiano, Vasari, B. Rossellino, Desiderio da Settignano,
A. Gaddi, Mino da Fiesole, L. and G. della Robbia, Taddeo Gaddi, Masodi Banco, B. Daddi,
Giotto (frescoes in the Peruzzi and Bardi chapels, with the famous "Stories of St. Francis"),
Donatello (the wooden "Crucifix" and "Annunciazione" relief). The Sacristy is also rich in
frescoes and and paintings. Monuments and tombs by some great Italian artists: L. B. Alberti,
Michelangelo (work by Vasari), Dante, Alfieri (by Canova), Rossini, Foscolo, Machiavelli,
