Situated a few kilometres from Florence is the historic collection of ceramics and porcelain of the Doccia manufacturing , from its foundation as part of the Marquis Ginori in 1737 to the middle of the 19th century, after which was born, in 1896, the new Ceramic Society Richard-Ginori. The museum has about 7000 works on display in cronological order that begins with the pioneering production from the middle of the 17th century which concludes in a room purposely reserved for the works created between 1923 and 1930 when the architect Gio Ponti was the artistic director of the factory. There are displayed not only dinner services, and of tea and coffee, some still in production with the adjacent factory and for sale in the Richard-Ginori Shop, but also more individual pieces and for everyday use such as shaving mugs, veilleuses, wine coolers, statues, pictures, church furnishings all from the first private Museum of Ginori at the Villa Buondelmonti. Make a note also of the so-called "Museum of the Earth", situated on the ground floor, that has a collection the polichrome terracotta used for the production and decoration of the procelain; on the upper floor, in a specially prepared section, there are displayed 16th century statuettes, groups and bas-relief models in wax used for the production of porcelain.
The Museum has also an extensive library and an archives actually being reorganised: here it is still possible to find designs and books from which the artists of the factory used as a starting point for the decoration of their pieces. The collection of designs, sketches and manuscripts, in particular the numerous productions of Giò Ponti in the 20's, do nothing else but increase the value of the entire collection. The Museum organises every month courses of painting on porcelain.
