The Maremma

Florentine supremacy

In 1406 Pisa fell under the power of the Florentines and Livorno and the Port Pisano where occupied by the Genoans who in 1421 yielded it to Florence; the two centres were considered unitarily: Port of Pisa as a maritime port of call and Livorno as a fortified and inhabited place. Only after 1530 with the formation of the Mediceo state, Livorno, because of the progressive earth-filled Port Pisano, came to know a notable development both demographically and commercially by the will of the Dukes to transform it into a major port in its own right.
