But the large estates with vast cultivated extentions of cereals and many areas left to the breeding of livestock which were left wild with flocks roaming about and scarse the population, made the conditions of this land still more inconvenient. The situation began to change in the course of the 1950's after the reform of the Maremma Corporation. It brought about a major diffusion of small properties, a diffusion of inhabited nuclei, a more appreciable enlarging of the infrastructure with great advantages also for the city of Grosseto that developed a process of recovery increasing the population (due also to various epidemics that in the middle of the 1700's were recorded as having only 650 people) until reaching in the 1971 census - 62.590 people.
