Celano, ancient stronghold and center of Marsica, it was destroyed in 1223 by Frederick II. It was rebuilt by the people of Celano two kilometers past the ruins.
The castle, an imposing, splendid fortress which is still in excellent condition today, was built by one of the three husbands of Countess Covella in 1392. In the courtyard is a large arcade, which is the base for a beautiful arched gallery. The four towers and a crowning guards' parapet give the fortress an imposing appearance which can be admired from the highway.
Also to be seen are the collegiate church of San Giovanni, dating back to the 1300s, and that of Santa Maria di Valle Verde. Slightly farther up from the town, in the summer it is worth it to make an excursion through the beatiful "Gole" (gorges) of Celano.
