Pescocostanzo, popular ski resort, is located on a spur of Mount Calvario on several karst plateaus between the southern slopes of the Maiella and Mount Greco. The Pescocostanzo, of medieval origin, has a highly distinctive appearance: the streets are flanked by medieval and Renaissance palaces and buildings, including the splendid Basilica of Santa Maria del Colle, founded in the 11th c. and extended in 1558.
Its wealth of features include a wooden ceiling and a sculpture of the Madonna del Colle. A highly elaborate wrought iron gate, an 18th-c. work of Renaissance inspiration, closes off the Chapel of the Sacramento. A picturesque procession for the Cristo Morto weaves through the streets of the town on Good Friday. The town has also been known for centuries for its pillow-lace cottage industry.
