Still surrounded by the pines so dear to D'Annunzio, Pescara, the main centre for trade and industry in Abruzzo, is built around the mouth of the Pescara river. Built on the foundations of Aternum, the port serving the Italic Vestini and Marrucini peoples, the city took the name of Piscaria only in the late Middle Ages. Pescara ceased to be a simple fortified township at the end of the 19th c. when the castle was taken down and a railway built in a bid for development.
Pescara's current appearance is that of a lively modern city stretching neatly along the coast and adorned by wonderful beaches. The picturesque harbour-canal is always thronged with fishing boats. The historical monuments of interest include the house of Gabriele D'Annunzio and the Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo.
Pescara welcomes its guests in every season, offering a wide choice regarding tourist accommodation.
