It is not long ago that Scanzano, previously an outlying ward of Montalbano lonico, has become an indipendent commune. Before the introduction of the Land Reform of 1950, Scanzano was a woodland and swampy area resembling untillable steppes. Nowadays, thanks to the Land Reform of 1950, the area surrounding Scanzano is similar to that of California, with its lush vegetation and many kinds of cultivations. Scanzano was the name of the ancient rural territory, that later became the name of the village.
