Whom do they represent? Are they Castor and Pollux, the mythological twins, sons of Jupiter and Laeda? Do they represent Armodius and Aristogiton, two historical personages? Probably they are warriors armed with lances ans shields, fierce oplites with proud looks and Greek profiles. But how did they happen to be in the bottom of the sea, just before Riace, along the Ionian coast of Calabria?.
There are many possibilities. The bronzes probably were coming from Greece or another town in Magna Graecia and sank before Riace with the
ship that carried them. Some think that they were thrown overboard to perevent them from falling in the hands of pirates.
