Gastronomy is made up of simple dishes with natural flowours collected from the local vegetation ot the territory. Apennines ends, between the forests of beech and the holm-oak, the Alpine meadowlands, the rocky steep walls of the Pollino
massif: the most imponent mountainous Calabrian group, with the presence of five summits above the 2000 meters, represents one of the most interesting systems of the southern Apennines, whether from the landscape point of view, or from the
naturalistic one, presenting to the visitors unexpected Alpine backgrounds and an environmental patrimony still untouched. From the Campotenese plain, nearby the motorway junction with the same name, where the main road enters to rise the Ruggiu plain; large tableland karst, where from its margins the De Gasperi and the nearby Fasanelli refuges rise, and starting point of numerous excursions. From the Impiso hill, can be reached, after an easy excursion, the Pollino plains, with the typical Alpine characteristics, surrounded by a natural amphiteatre of an extraordinary beauty, that constitute the heart and the symbol of the Pollino National Park, where it is possible to admire and to reach the most important summits of the massif: Sierra di Crispo, Sierra delle Ciavole, mount Pollino and Sierra Dolcedorme, that with a 2266 meters high constitutes the highest summit of the mountainous complex and of the whole Calabria.
On the upper side of the plain, near the "Big Door" of Pollino, where the Last magnificent Loricane pines can be met, that with its imponent and twisted shapes stay tenaciously clung to the unaccessable out crop of rock, representing a fantastic and delicate fight of life and a challenge against the natural elements.
