Maierà is a pleasant little town characterised by
harmonious, terraced houses. Maierà owes its
origins to the phenomenon known as Norman fortification, dating back to the 11th
century. The ancient Byzantine hamlet of
M'arà was conquered by Guiscardo, creating a barony which then became a dukedom.
The most important monument of Maierà is
the Palazzo Ducale which, in the summer months, houses the various works of
Calabrian artists, and which has recently also
become the location for the Museum of Chilli Peppers.
A mention should also be made about the mother church, dedicated to
Santa Maria del Piano which preserves frescoes from the Renaissance. Other
churches, such as that of Santa Maria del Casale,
have Byzantine or Italo-Greek origins. Also worthy of note is the famous
monastery of S. Pietro in Carbonara, of Italo-Greek
origins. The gastronomy of Maierà mirrors the typical cuisine of the hillside
immediately up against the Riviera dei Cedri.
Home made pasta is typical, generally dressed with meat sauces made from goat or
pork.
Maierà is made even more charming by the large choice of accommodation
facilities on offer.
