Orsomarso is one of the most important centres inside the Parco Nazionale del
Pollino, and it is particularly interesting
for the Valley of the river Argentino: an extraordinary nature reserve of great
rural value. Orsomarso is a tranquil village,
in direct contact with the nature which surrounds it. The fascination of the
unspoilt nature and the fascinating past
represented by its historical centre make Orsomarso a point of great interest
for the tourist. The historical centre is a
casket full of art treasures. Starting from the numerous little streets,
openings and alleys which characterise it, or
climbing up to the top of the Clock tower (torre dell'Orologio), the ancient
baronial palace.
The church of Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista) has its bell-tower
in the form of a feudal tower, whereas
inside, there are eight Neapolitan altars from the 1700's and some frescoes
dating from the XV-XVI century. The XII century
church of San Salvatore preserves some canvasses attributed to Luca Giordano.
The little church of the Madonna del Mercure,
an ancient basilican oratory, guards inside a particular little statue made from
plaster and mortar. Orsomarso can also
boast of an enviable naturalistic wealth, composed of high mountains, valleys,
watercourses and numerous caves of karstic
origin, amongst which the Grotta del Frassaneto, in the area of Scherani-
Limpida. To the north of the built up area is the
Grotta di Sant'Angelo, the entrance to which dominates the valley of Campolungo
and di Mauro, in an inaccessible and
impervious zone.
