In the itinerary of Antonio it is cited as Roscianum and was once inhabited in Roman times as proved by some findings recently made in a district of the town. Rossano was one of the most important Byzantine centres of the region in the period 8th to 12th century and, in fact, it is rich in Byzantine reminders.
Of these are the little curch of Panaghia, or Madonna of All Saints, dated mid-1100 and mainly the 10th century church of St. Mark, considered along with the Cattolica of Stilo as being the two major monuments of the Byzantine period in Calabria.
