The ancient agglomerate, at 311 m a.s.l., is nowadays abandoned, nevertheless, is still possible to admire its structure as a fortified village and, as all the medieval sites, its position on a sandstone promontory, is strictly based on the defensive needs and the control of the valley below.
The center is part of a naturalistic and panoramic environment that is still entire. The first site is divided into two nuclei of different plant: the first one is disposed around the site of the medieval Addolorata's Church close to the rock where the castle was (XV century); the second one, probably born after the Arabian's defeat, when the castle had lost its defensive function, is southern, disposed around the Annunziata's Arcipriestal Church rebuilt in the 30's, which keeps the rests of a precious altar made of polychrome marbles belonged to the sixteenth century.
About the origins of Brancaleone Vetus, there are not testified proves. One of the hypothesis more credible remains however linked to the large movement of the Monks that took place in Calabria from the fifth and the sixth centuries A.D. (priests and greek monks, of the Basilian's order) and that interested the ionic area especially.
