Reggio Calabria, which is the largest town of Calabria and also the main centre of commerce, stands in a splendid position on the eastern coast of the Straits of Messina, where the straits open into the Ionian Sea.
It enjoys an exceptionally mild climate all the year round and, for this reason, is a popular climatic and seaside resort. This town has ancient origins that date from the second half of the 8th century B.C. and are linked to the founding of other Calcidian town, among which Zancle, otherwise known as Messina.
It is aristocratic and prospers thanks to its advantageous position in the centre of one of the most important communication lines of those times. Reggio, however, experienced and destruction during the Greek expansion in Italy, until, threatened by Pyrrho and the Carthapinians, it decided to ally with the Romans who then took over the town.
