After Augustus, Tiberius found the island replete with roads and buildings, and he made these into a miniature personal kingdom. He spent the last eleven years of his life in Capri, from 26 to 37 A.D. According to Tacitus, he built twelve villas and set up his imperial residence in the one dedicated to Jove (Villa Jovis). The ruins of this construction and of another, Villa Damecuta, brought to light in large part by the archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri, are grand and imposing.
