Camerota's old town centre was built on a hill. Just like all the towns in Magna Graecia. In ancient Greek Kamaratòn means "vault", "vault-shaped". It can describe both the use of vaults to build houses and natural caves existing in that area. Since Camerota's name has a Greek origin, the town is supposed to be founded by the Greeks in 7th - 8th centuries b.C. when they settled Southern Italy. That small town developed around a castle, walled in 535 - 553, when the Gothic - Byzantine war took place and several refugees were settling down into that area.
Marina di Camerota, 6 km from the medieval town Camerota, has remained a lively Italian fishing village. The bars are still the centre of village life, at night people stroll along the well-tended promenade of the harbour. In the narrow alleys you will - every now and then - meet old women and men, their donkeys burdened with purchases or firewood. Marina di Camerota offers visitors an unforgettable spectacle: innumerable caves, wonderful ravines, the flowering and luxuriant vegetation, the charming beaches which are inside and outside the town and which enrapture senses. With their sand and cristal-clear sea water; the Saracenic towers, which rises fiercely on a promontory, dominate the town and it seems that they protect it. The tourist port, which is one of the most modern in this area: the new piers and the movable wharfs makes it more receptive and suited to new exigences. All these qualities give the appellation of "Pearl of the Cilento" to Marina di Camerota. Marina di Camerota is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the Cilento; for this reason it is very popular in Italy and quite frequented during the Italian holidays in July and August.
