Camerota's old town centre was built on a hill. Just like all the towns in Magna Graecia. In ancient Greek Kamaratòn means "vault", "vault-shaped". It can describe both the use of vaults to build houses and natural caves existing in that area. Since Camerota's name has a Greek origin, the town is supposed to be founded by the Greeks in 7th - 8th centuries b.C. when they settled Southern Italy.
