Collecchio is located 10 kms from Parma and it used to be an important stopping
place along the Romea road. At the entrance
of the village is the monumental portal marking the access to the park of Villa
Paveri Fontana, built at the end of the XVII
century. Among the monuments and museums: Museo Civiltà Contadina in Ozzano
Taro; Church of San Prospero (XI-century); Villa
Nevicati (XIX-century). The ancient "Colliculum" in medieval times was a
territory owed by the bishops of Parma. The parish
church of San Prospero built in the 11th century and largely reconstructed in
1200, conserves terracotta and stone
decorations in the central apse, and inside, original 11th- and 12th-century
capitals with zoomorphic figures.
In the left aisle there is a white marble bas-relief with a Baptism of Christ,
the work of a 12th-century Campionese master.
The 19th-century Villa Nevicati with its park of secular trees is also worth a
visit. Just outside Collecchio to the east,
turn left into Conventino road to enter the Carrega woods park,once a hunting
reserve of the Farnese and Bourbons, with
interesting historical buildings, numerous lakes and important botanical
stations, now a Regional Park set up for public
visits and excursions.
