Sasso Marconi takes its name from the medieval toponym of the Rock (Sasso di Glosina) which rises up at the confluence of the Reno and the Setta rivers, and from Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of the wireless telegraphy. The municipality is located in between the Apennine and the piedmont areas.
Numerous remains of human settlements from the Prehistoric period have been discovered in this territory, which is a crossing and connection point between the Apennine and piedmont areas. There is also interesting evidence from the Etruscan and Roman periods (the aqueduct created in the last years of the 1st century B.C. at the confluence of the Reno and the Setta for transporting drinking water to Bologna is, in some places, still functional).
Major highways pass through the Sasso Marconi: the Porrettana state road, the A1 motorway and the Bologna-Pistoia railway line.
