The municipality of Alseno is to be found on the Via Emilia road, halfway between Fidenza and Fiorenzuola. This locality is famous for its Romanesque Pieve parish church, its medieval castle, and the church of Saint Martin.
It is most particularly renowned, however, for welcoming to its territory the Cistercian Abbey Chiaravalle della Colomba, one of the region's most famous; it was founded in 1136 by the abbot Bernard of Clairveaux, a protagonist in the Benedictine reform.
The name of the abbey originates from the place of origin of the Clairvaux monks (from which Chiaravalle is derived) and in memory of the dove (Colomba) which marked out the perimeter of the building with small pieces of wood.
