The municipality of Cotignola is located on the left bank of the river Senio. Numerous remains testify to how, already in the period before the Christian era, there were ancient Roman settlements in the territory; an important example is the beautiful Caio Vario stele which is located in the open gallery of the Town Library. During the second World War, the town was almost completely destroyed, its reconstruction, however, was carried out in respect of the original town plan.
Things to see at Cotignola, the Church constructed in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi in Gothic-Roman style, a tablet of the Carracci school preserved in the Collegiate church of Santo Stefano, the Sforza Palazzo, the Acuto Tower, realised in 1376 by Sir John Hawkwood (a famous English condottiere). Worthy of note is also the "Varoli" art museum.
