Peregrinatio towards Rome
The pilgrims were mainly attracted by the "eternal city of Rome", where Saint Peter and Saint Paul had suffered martydom. The great majority were the religious, monarchs, also merchants, knights and rulers, which in the course of at least seven centuries went on pilgrimages along these roads towards the "holy places".
In this way there was an exchange of belongings such as: religious symbols, holy figures, various languages and dialects all of which belonged to a versatile mentality, the medieval one. Where these multitudes passed it is possible to rediscover abbeys, refuges, places of shelter and relief, meditation and praying for the pilgrims.
