ORGANIZATION OF THE PILGRIMAGES
The pilgrims who carried out their journey on foot covered 5-6 leagues a day, about 20-25 km, while those lucky enough to own a horse or a cart covered up to 15-20 leagues from sun-rise to sunset. They wore a long mantle, which served as a blanket during the night, and a wide-brimmed hat for protection against the rain and sun. They kept numerous things in their haversack: bread and cheese, the safe-conduct (a type of passport ante Litteram), money, flint, at least one pair of leather souls for mending shoes, a knife, laces, some lard and wine in a leather flask or pumpkin.
They carried a staff to lean on whilst climbing, probe fords, chase away stray dogs and defend themselves when necessary. On departure they had their mantle blessed.
