THE "ROADSIDE CROSSES" AND THE "HOSPITIA"
Whilst travelling to Rome and other sacred places, the pilgrims followed itineraries by land or water. Crosses, as signs, were positioned along the land routes. These signs were marked in the centre with a "blessing hand" with the inscription "DEXTERA DOMINI". Some of the crosses have been discovered in the area of Ravenna still in their original position (Pisignano, Faenza). Others can be seen in museums (Faenza's Pinacoteca, Ravenna's National and Archiepiscopal Museums). When inside the "hospitia" (which were generally situated near the espicopal abode) the pilgrims were under the protection (TVITIO) of the parish.
