Where land and water merge
Some of the most enchanting areas are to be found in the north of the district, within the enormous Po Delta Reserve. These marshy reaches, protected by the European Ramsar Convention, are the habitat of large herons and small kingfishers, blackwinged stilts, little egrets and many species of duck. Striking out through the pinewoods, sudden breaks in the undergrowth open out to reveal broad slashes of sky and water, signs of that eternal conflict between sea and land which has given the region its unique character. Here you may also come upon free-ranging horses of the same breed as those that roam the Camargue, or be delighted by the daring acrobatics of the marsh-harriers. The wood at Punta Alberete, a nature reserve protected by the WWF, is perhaps the most important of the perfectly preserved natural havens in the district of Ravenna. The trees seem to rise up out of the water and boats are the most natural means of getting about. The flora and fauna is as abundant as it is varied, so it should come as no surprise that the symbol of the park is the glossy ibis.
At Ravenna and environs, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
