The quickest route for those coming down from Venice is the "Romea" 309 trunk road linking the two towns, with turn-offs for Padua and Ferrara. From the south, in addition to the A1 and A14 motorways, there is the E45 highway that crosses the Appennines and links Ravenna and Cesena with Rome and Perugia.
Ravenna is situated on the Rimini-Ferrara, Ravenna-Bologna and Ravenna-Florence railway lines. Apart from the Bologna line, these are not fast routes. To make up for it, the train journey through the Appennines down to Florence is wonderfully picturesque, not least for the places it touches at on the way: Ravenna, Faenza, Brisighella, Marradi, Florence!
