Dominated by the splendid peaks of the Oriental Dolomites, Forni di Sopra -
at an altitude of 900mts - has during all the winter received a high grade
of
covering snow, which allowed a long opening period for the ski lifts. Very
well equipped (other than a descending piste with an artificial snow-making
installation, it also has a ring for "cross-country", ice rink and slalom
with automatic
stop-watch, gymnasium), offers the tourist comfortable hotels (most under
family
management) and another 2000 bed spaces in private accommodations. The
restaurants are also of a very high quality: Forni di Sopra in fact is known
for
its typical cuisine, made up of dishes based on the mountain herbs (known
and
appreciated from the time of the "Serenissima" Venetian Republic) and of
natural
products. Particularly characterisitic is its historic centre, characterised
by its old and austere
buildings in stone and wood, with external stairs and surrounding balconies.
From Forni di Sopra you ascend in the chairlift until the Cima Crusicalas,
at
an altitude of 2073 mts, from where there is a 360° view of the Dolomites,
from
Antelao to the Tre Cime of Lavaredo. The descent, on the piste of Varmost,
which
winds for 5kms between woods is without doubt one of the most beautiful
piste of Friuli, other than being the one with the major differences in
level. The ski
lifts of Varmost are in fact, the highest of the whole region and take you
above 2,000 mts,
where you can ski on grounds always sunny, even in full winter. But at Forni
di Sopra you don't only ski on the Varmost: there are a series of other ski
lifts and deep valleys that guarantee enjoyment even for those first timers
and for
those who prefer a descent more exciting and are scornful of gentler slopes.
Between
the others, this piste (on which never looses the covering of snow thanks to
the
programmed artificial snow system) it is ideal for the family, in that many
of these
have been studied in a particular to way to allow the parents that don't ski
to control
from nearby the acrobatics of their children (who otherwise can be entrusted
to the
kindergarten), staying tranquilly lying on the sunbeds in front of a shelter
of an
alpine hut.
