The Regional Natural Park of Monti Simbruini covers an area of 35.000 hectares belonging to the towns of Camerata Nuova, Cervara di Roma, Subiaco, Jenne, Trevi nel Lazio, Filettino and Vallepietra.A great calcareous chain on the border between Abruzzo and Lazio, the Monti Simbruini have their highest peaks in the Mount Autore (1853 m), Tarino (1961 m), Cotento (2014 m) and Viglio (2156 m). At these levels, crests are rocky and moulded by atmospheric conditions. Between 1300 and 1600 metres we find highlands. Under these there are canyons and glens often suggestive. Everywhere there are abundant depressions, furrowed fields and dolinas (sinks) which capture and absorbe water. The most important grottoes (caves) are "Pozzo of Vallepietra", "Simbrivio's Grotto" and "Pertuso's Grotto" in Filettino territory, near the border with Trevi nel Lazio.
In the Monti Simbruini are present many vegetal and animal species typical of the Appennine chain. Between 1200 and 1800 metres there are magnificent beech woods, with some spruce-firs, yewtree, mountain maples and reforested pine woods. At a lower level it's possible to find oaks, hornbeams, flowering ash, maples, holm- oaks, hazel and chestnut trees which are well blended with the Mediterranean bush. In the glades clearings and in the high altitude pasture fields, at beginning of Summer, are beautiful flowerings of gentiants, daffodils, lilies, violets and of many types of wild orchids. More than 1000 species of plants have been counted.
Among the interesting wild animals are wolf, fox, wild cat, porcupine, marten, squirrel, stone-marten and wild boar, Among the important birds are eagle, pellegrino hawk, buzzard, eagle-owl and owl. In the waters of the Aniene and the Simbrivio live "fario" trout, "barbo", and crayfish. There are many rare species of amphibians and insects.
