Alatri is situated on a hill (503 m a.s.l.) overlooking the Frosinone valley, this ancient city of the Hernici is among the Ciociari centres richest in history. The fine Acropolis dates back to the 4th-century B.C. and has one of the most perfect and best preserved examples of Cyclopean Walls in the whole of Italy.
On the Acropolis rises the Cathedral, with the 17th-century facade. The beautiful Romanesque-Gothic Church of St. Mary Major and the imposing Gottifredi Palace (13th century), which now houses the Municipal Museum, should also be visited.
