Fumone, known as the "Olympus" of Ciociaria, is an ancient fortress which dominates, from its 800 metres height, over more than forty surrounding villages. Apparently the town owes its name to the fact that it was once a signalling post from where warning of the arrival of enemy forces was given by lighting a fire on a tower. During the Middle Ages the "castrum", was used as a papal prison for important state prisoners, the most famous of whom was Celestine V, the only Pope in history to have ever abdicated just a few months as Supreme Pontiff.
This historical place full of fascination and mistery belongs today to marquess Longhi-De Paolis and is open to public visiting. The medieval old town is particularly evocative. The castle functions also as a restaurant where you can taste typical food and enjoy the lively medieval atmosphere of an ancient cellar built in the year 1000.
