Subiaco, the ancient town of Sublaqueum (the name means beneath the lakes) located in the Valle dell'Aniene was founded by Nero who blocked the course of the river to create three artificial lakes before building a grandiose villa nearby (1st century AD). Traces of the imperial complex have been revealed, including a grotto and baths. The medieval town contains narrow streets, some very steep, and is clustered around a 16th-century Rocca abbaziale. The young Benedetto da Norcia spent the first years of his religious life here and founded numerous monasteries.
