The Natural Reserve of Monte Rufeno, founded in 1983, is part of the series of protected areas in the Lazio region and extends for 2892 hectares (7146 acres) in the territory of the Comune (Municipality) of Acquapendente, on the boundary with Umbria and Tuscany. It protects large areas of woodland in a countryside made up of hills predominant with mixed oak forests, as well as areas of Mediterranean maquis vegetation and conifer reforestation. It is also rich in flora and fauna, with the presence of some rare species. A number of characteristic, stone farmhouses have been renovated for didactic and accommodation purposes and are scattered in between the woods; finally, there are a number of streams, ponds and springs which make excursions especially enjoyable, as well as being favourable for the flora and fauna, some of which are exclusive to these environments. The Museo del Fiore (Museum of the Flower), near Torre Alfina, allows one to appreciate the bio-diversity of the territory and leads one through the world of flowers, illustrating their evolutionary, ecological, and cultural aspects and their relationship with the animal world.
At Natural Reserve of Monte Rufeno, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
