Mit seiner Geschichte, seinen Bewohnern und seiner Landschaft hat Rom sowohl die Sonnen- als auch die Schattenseiten der Zivilisation integriert.
Die Stadt mag zwar weniger vital und kultiviert sein als Mailand, weniger malerisch und wohlerhalten als Florenz oder Venedig - unübertroffen jedoch ist sie in ihrem komplizierten Geflecht von Gegenwart und Vergangenheit. Rom ist keine Stadt zum einfachen Lieben- oder Kennenlernen. Es gibt Zeiten, wo der Besucher den tobenden Verkehr und die aggressiven Einwohner verfluchen wird. Niemand wird jedoch Rom verlassen, ohne daß ihn die Stadt verändert hätte.
Ist es auch unmöglich, Rom wirklich zu verstehen (nicht umsonst heißt es: "Für Rom reicht ein ganzes Leben nicht aus"), so hilft uns die Ewige Stadt doch, etwas von uns selbst zu verstehen, etwas von unserem "kleinlichen Jammer" und der Vergänglichkeit der Welt.
