Vatican city, in ancient times named Ager Vaticanus, was home to a circus and Nero's gardens. In 1929 – the year in which the Lateran Pacts were stipulated between the Italian State and the Holy See – it became an independent state.
Since 1506, its defence has been entrusted to the Swiss Guards, with their colourful uniforms reminiscent of the Renaissance.
The ever famous Saint Peter’s Square, designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini, together with the colonnade, provide the setting for the largest church dedicated to Christianity. The construction of Saint Peter's Basilica began in 1506 and was finished in 1612; to be precise, it is a reconstruction, the present basilica having been built on the location of a previous one built by the Emperor Constantine.
