The Sistine Chapel was built between 1475 and 1481; the inside of the chapel is made up of a single nave with a barrel vault with pedentives and sprandels and a lunette above each of the twenty arched windows. The chapel is divided into two parts by a marble transenna, the work of Mino da Fiesole, Andrea Bregno and Giovanni Dalmata.
The vault of the Sistine Chapel was originally simply painted blue and spangled with stars; it was pope Julius II della Rovere who commissioned Michelangelo for its redecoration; Michelangelo worked at the vault from 1508 to 1512 and gave origin to a work which today is defined as the supreme masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.
