The name Brixia, that is Brescia, supposedly stems from the Gallic root brik, meaning mountain or hill. The city of Brescia, the provincial capital and the second largest city in Lombardy, is a prosperous centre with flourishing manufacturing, commercial and crafts industries. It is also home to important architectural treasures such as the castle that now houses the Museo delle Armi e del Risorgimento (Arms and Risorgimento Museum). Its Piazza del Foro is bordered by the Capitolium, the Roman Theatre, the San Salvatore basilica. The Broletto (city hall), and the Rotonda or old cathedral. The city's prestige as a cultural centre also stems from its rich art collections, such as those held in the Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo art gallery, the Museo dell'età cristiana (Museum of the Christian Age) and the Museo Romano (Roman Museum). Between the city of Brescia and Lake Garda, there lie numerous localities begging to be explored for their archaeological, historical and artistic beauty.
The accommodation solutions offered by the local operators are characterised by a high standard of organisation and quality, particularly regarding the hotel, congress and sports facilities. There is a large selection of hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
