Gargnano, dominated by Mount Denervo, consists of the town of Gargnano, whose houses cluster around the small port, and twelve hamlets, some on the lake, others situated on the gentle slopes, and still others in the hinterland. All are linked by convenient scenic roads that travel through olive groves and cross meadows and woods. Nature and art enhance each other in this area rich of olive trees, lemon trees and Mediterranean vegetation. Usually building of a certain architectural and historical importance can become very famous thanks to the various possibilities of sports offered (sailing, athletics, archery, clay- pigeon shooting).
Gargnano it is a sailing paradise. The strong winds that always blow in this area means that Gargnano is well loved by the sailors. Each year in September the most important lake regatta in Europe: the "Centomiglia". Countless excursions on foot, on horseback, by mountain bike or car can be taken through the lovely hinterland.
To visit: the Church of St. Francisco (XIII centrury). Villa Feltrinelli, where Mussolini lived, construction of 1894. St. Valentino Hermitage sits at about 700 m above sea level with a splendid view of the lake. The Parish Church of Saint Martino (XI century), built up on the ruins of a roman building. Villa Bettoni, (XVIII century), contains priceless works of art, paintings, rare books, fine collections of antique furniture, stuccowork and decorations. The spectacular garden designed by Amerigo Pierallini has a semicircular layout.
