Lonato, situated in a panoramic position on the morainic heights, is located in
the hinterland not far from Lake Garda and from Desenzano. Although fairly small
in size, it possesses a rich variety of perfectly preserved monuments. One of
these is the Rocca fortress which has recently been restructured. It also
possesses one of the largest private libraries thanks to the "Ugo Da Como"
foundation which contributes to its maintenance. Lonato also offers numerous
possibilities of hillside and countryside walks, horse-rides or bicycle rides or
even of rejuvenating swims in Lake Garda and sunbathing on the beaches of its
lido. It is a town with an ancient history, clustered around the fortress, the
Municipal tower and the Soratino cupola. Lonato is well known for its
agricultural, industrial and tourist activities. In 1873, about 2 km away from
the built-up area, the remains of lake-dwellings were discovered which are
related to the Polada culture.
To visit - Castello di Dragulo, an ancient burgh, perhaps of Lombard
origins, dating from the 10th century. The ancient Benedictine Abbey of
Maguzzano from the 5th century. The Parish Church dedicated to San Zeno, dating
from the Roman era. The Church of the Madonna di San Martino. The Rocca di
Lonato fortress which overlooks the southern part of Lake Garda. The Casa del
Podestà, an important example of a house museum on Lake Garda. The del Corlo
Church dating from the 14th century. The Baroque style Cathedral, shaped in the
form of a Latin cross. The Church of St. Antonio Abate dating back to the 15th
century. The Municipal Tower which represents the most
characteristic historical monument of Lonato. The Church of
St. Cipriano, dating back to ancient times, officially recorded for the first
time in the Pope Lucio III Bull of 1184, as being property of the parish church
of San Zeno di Lonato. The Roman Furnace, located to the south of Lonato, along
the road to Castiglione delle Stiviere.
