It is here that one begins to follow the valley of the Mincio which leads us to Mantua and thus to the Po. Towers and the walls of an ancient castle (XIIth century) built by the Scaligeri announce our arrival at the ancient village of Monzambano, situated on a hill roughly 90 metres high. Worth a visit is the parish church of San Michele, built between 1743 and 1777: inside are paintings by Felice Cignaroli (1767), and Agostino Ugolini (1793) and eighteenth century statues. Not far away, Castellaro Lagusello whose name suggests reasons for a brief stop: a thirteenth century castle of which walls and turrets are still standing, and an enchanting lake. The church of Castellaro dedicated to San Nicola (1741) houses furnishings and paintings from the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. A tour in the hills might also include Forni and Pille Olfino (the parish church offers seventeenth century decorations, statues, friezes and stuccoes).
