It is located at the confluence of the Mallero river and the river Adda, at the mouth of the Valmalenco valley. The historical centre of Sondrio is characterised by numerous architectural styles; in the same zone or in the same street, it is possible to note the different faces of Sondrio: historical, Renaissance, Neo-classic, Baroque or contemporary. Piazza Garibaldi is the centre of the town, from here departs an interesting route of streets and alleys in which it is possible to admire monuments, the fine buildings of nobility and piazzas. The Masegra Castle, the Palazzo Carbonera and the Church of S. Rocco are just a few examples of the medieval Sondrio; the Palazzo Sertoli and Palazzo Sassi with the characteristic Stüa (very old rooms entirely in wood) represent the Baroque Sondrio while the della Collegiata Church, the ex Teatro Sociale theatre and the Monumento della Riconoscenza (Monument of Recognition) are Neo-classic.
Lastly, the modern and contemporary Sondrio with the Villa Quadrio which accommodates the Valtellinese Museum of History and Art, the gardens of Palazzo Sertoli, the Gombaro Bridge and the Palazzo of the Province and the Government.
