Leading into the valley the Apsa torrent is cut through by furrows, there is a steep overhanging rock, it seems to be suspended, and there is just visible the roman church of Saint Arduino (XI cent.); further on are the paired off houses of Mercato Vecchio, seat of the Council of Pietrarubbia from which the hamlet is spread out along the sides of the valley. From here a road of about 2km takes you to the ancient Petra Rubra. In the shadows of rocky keeps of a spectral aspect there materialises a town at one time abandoned but today restored from which rises a slender ancient mast of a castle which has nearly disappeared.
To be admired, between the other sculptures, is the Egyptian Carro with the Obelisk of Peace, which by this time has become the symbol of the castle, and of the town church of Saint Silvester, this is also of recent restoration, with its rose window and marble altar. Above all at sunset, when the last rays of the sun set on fire the Petra Rubra, it seems to revive the ancient story of this pinnacle transformed into an unconquerable rock. In the V century this strange mountain was given to the lords of Carpegna from the barbarous Ottone and fortified for the defense of the sparse population of the area. Therefore the ruins make up the oldest hold of the Montefeltro who gave birth to the famous "condottiero" Guido da Montefeltro recorded by Dante in the XXVII song of Hell.
