Historically Sassofeltrio was already mentioned in the VIII century, when is was cited as Serra del Sasso in the donation that King Pipino gave to the Papal State. Under the place name Sassum, the town was comprised of castles given in 962 in a feud to Ulderico of Carpegna on the part of Ottone I.
The numerous chalk quarries that characterise the morphologic aspect of the zone permitted the birth of diverse activities that has brought about a particular industry to the centre.
