A natural route to France, the Bodano Plain and Europe, crossed from the beginning of time till the 19th centuary by armies, pilgrims, travellers, artists and traders, the Susa Valley has seen its history along its roads, mountain passes, greater and lesser cols, passable or impassable which traverse mountains. Later came the steam locomotive which passed through the tunnels of the Alps creating a secure and comfortable connection between city and mountain. Today, with an improved and modern motorway, an international railway system used by high speed and commuter trains (TGV and ETR), and new motorway and railway tunnels which have made the Upper Susa Valley the most accessible valley in the entire alpine region.
Man has lived in this valley and has modified this land- at times hard and difficult- and he in turn has had to change adapting to the social-economic transformation of which he was at times the protagonist and in others inert: yesterday farm worker and breeder, scratching a living from the mountains and their brief seasons and what was required to survive: today tourist operator and mountain guide he has acquired the skills needed to receive in his habitat, an ever increasing number of tourists that visit the Upper Susa Valley.
