Here, at the centre of Lake Orta on placid and green waters lies the solid reality of the Island of San Giulio. He was a greek deacon, and church builder together with his brother Giuliano, patron of hard-working Gozzano; still today ancient spirits linger: that of the Lombard Duke Minulfo, traitor beheaded by the new King Agilulfo; of the Emperor Otto who lay besiege to the island held by the proud Queen Villa; of the vescovi-conti who for more than ten centuries governed this territory decentralizing power to the inhabitants of the castles and giving life, in effect, to a republican form which was undheard of between the tenth and eighteenth centuries; of Guglielmo da Volpiano, the legendary abbot of Cluny, who was born on the Island of San Giulio.
Though the atmosphere of ancient times never ceases to exercise its subtle fascination on tourists and visitors, there are other reasons, no less important, which attract attention. The whole Cusio area is constantly growing from a tourist point of view; there are hotels both modern and of time-long tradition, up-to-date structures and camping sites; it is at the centre of an area which includes the prestigious Lake Maggiore and Ossola Valleys with the imposing Mt. Rosa massif; there is an excellent public navigational service with the motorboats and a programme of important artistic, cultural and sporting events. All this, together with the monuments, the mountain scenery, the walks and excursions, not to mention the opportunities for waterskiing, sailing, windsurf, tennis, riding and other sports, makes for a pleasant stay in hotels or guest houses offering welcome hospitality.
At Lake Orta, there is tourist accommodation available in hotels, farm holiday, farmhouse, residence self-catering accommodation, mountain chalets, b&b, rooms for rent, holiday homes, camp sites and tourist villages.
