Camino is a small country village situated in the Basso Monferrato close to Alessandria and Vercelli. The Castle is situated on the top of a hill in the centre of an spacious park. Someone says that it is the most beautiful and imposing castle of the entire region. Founded in the 11th century, it has a drawbridge and communication trenches.
It was enlarged and rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the central hall there are some paintings by Pier Francisco Guala dating back to 1746-47. In the chapel there is a tryptych by the Volpi brothers dating back to the 16th- century. From the huge and high quadrangular tower the immense panorama of the Monferrato may be enjoyed and of the Po Valley, until the Alps circle: it is indeed one of the most important destinations, partially hidden, of our entire province.
The castle can be visited only by authorization of the owners, the Gutris family, and it presents, as major attractions, the artistic courtyard with precious historical findings, loggias and galleries that are now empty of the incomparable collections of arms and of artworks that existed before, the fireplace room of the XV century, the rich library and the wide halls of French taste of the XVIII century.
The Church of San Gottardo of the 12th century which has frescos dating back to the 15th century. The Parish church of San Lorenzo Martire, built at the end of the 17th-century. It houses a canvas painted in the style of the Moncalvo school.
