The actual date of the foundation of the inhabited area of Barolo remains uncertain, although it is assumed that its origins go back to the Early middle ages, since the houses were developed mainly at the foot of the castle. Towards the middle of the XIIIth century, it became a feud of the Falletti marcheses who, from this land of Barolo, assumed the name of the house. The estate remained property of Falletti family until the date of its extinction in the Eighteen hundreds. It was the Falletti’s most important feud and was the "capital" of all their properties which reached a total of more than twenty castles in the Langhe area.
The image of Barolo itself is quite fascinating, together with its strong evocations of history, art, culture and wine production. One enters into a small square in front of the castle through a crenellated, medieval style gate. In the small square to the side of the castle stands the parish church of San Donato dating from the XVth century, in ancient times chapel of the noble Falletti family, and later enlarged and adapted for the parish.
