As Cannobio is situated on the Piedmont Region coast of the Lago Maggiore in the Province of Verbania, it is the first Italian town on the road which connects Italy to northern Europe through the San Gottardo and San Bernardino Passes.
It is literally a geographical and cultural 'borderland' situated between the Piedmont and Lombardy in Italy and the Ticine of Switzerland. Each area has in turn given some of its spirit and added a cultural overlay to the historical development, contributing to an environment of considerable touristic attraction.
Cannobio has been described by many historians as a very old and prosperous village because of its intense commercial activity existing before the year 1000.
The early economy originated from the exchange of products from agriculture and crafts transported between harbours along the lake by large boats which carried all kinds of goods.
