Stone artefacts indicate that this area was populated by prehistoric man and was later occupied by the Celto-Ligurian tribes and the Sarmati (subsequently dominated by the Romans) after whom the valley was named.
According to tradition, in medieval times a battle was fought in 935 in which Aleramo defeated the Berber invaders and the hill overlooking the ancient battlefield is still known as Brich dei saraceni.
