According to an ancient legend, Trani was founded by Tirreno, the son of Diomedes. Following a period of famine, the town became the seat of the Sacra Regia Udienza. The medieval period saw a blossoming of the town's fortunes, first under Norman control then under that of the Aragonese.
The cathedral is the architectural showpiece and provides such splendour and fame to Trani as to be known as the "Queen of the Puglian Cathedrals", it is the height of the expression of Puglian Romanesque style located in front of the Swabian Castle, one of the most important structures built at the request of Frederick II.
